Carved Overlay Ornamentation

Singing SerpentCarved Overlay

Endless Knot This is done by taking a very thin piece of wood, cutting it into the desired shape and applying the cutout to the surface of the harp. When finished, overlay has an embossed feel and look in that the raised surface catches light and creates shadow. William prefers carved overlay to carving because it shows better onstage and does not serve to weaken the harp in any way by having removed wood. Some of the overlay designs are themselves carved. This is true of all the Celtic knots and of the knotlike animals. When William carves an overlay, he first cuts out the design from wood which is 1/16 1/8" thick. He then hand carves some of the wood away from the surface of the overlay so that parts of the design appear to be passing under or over other parts of the design. When finished, the carved overlay is applied to the surface of the instrument and has a very threedimensional look and textural feel.
